Double yellow lines are the strongest routine parking control in Britain. They mean no waiting at any time and they do not need a plate to be enforceable.
They are used where a parked vehicle would block sightlines or narrow the road dangerously.
What this sign means
Waiting is prohibited at all times, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
The restriction is no waiting, not simply no parking. Parking suggests leaving the vehicle, whereas waiting covers any stationary vehicle, including sitting at the kerb with the engine running. The only routine exceptions are setting down or picking up passengers, and loading where it is permitted.
Loading and unloading may still be permitted unless yellow marks on the kerb show a loading ban.
What to do when you see it
Find another place to stop. There is no time of day when parking here is allowed.
- Do not park, even briefly, on double yellow lines.
- Blue Badge holders may park for up to three hours in most areas, with the badge and clock displayed, unless loading is banned.
- Check the kerb for blips before loading.
- Never park on double yellows near a school entrance or junction.
