If you booked a theory test and something has come up, you're not stuck with that date. The DVSA lets you move a theory test booking online or by phone, and in most cases it costs nothing to do so, provided you act early enough.
The rule that catches people out is the notice period. Give the DVSA at least three clear working days before your appointment and you can rearrange for free. Leave it later than that and you'll usually forfeit the £23 fee and have to pay again for a new slot.

Clear working days means Monday to Friday, excluding the day you make the change and the day of the test itself, and excluding weekends and bank holidays. If your test is on a Wednesday, for example, you'd typically need to change it by the end of the previous Thursday to stay within the free window.
It's worth working this out carefully rather than assuming. A lot of learners lose their fee simply because they counted a weekend as a working day, or left it until the Monday before a Wednesday test and missed the cut-off by hours.

Changing a test you booked with the DVSA
Go to the official GOV.UK theory test change service and sign in with your booking reference and licence number. You'll be shown available slots at your chosen test centre, or nearby centres if you're happy to travel. Pick a new date, confirm, and you'll get an updated confirmation email.
You can also call the DVSA theory test booking line to make the change over the phone. This is useful if you're struggling with the online system or need to change more than one detail at once, such as the centre and the date together.
Changing a test we booked for you
If you're a Full Member with us, changing your theory test is part of what we do for you. Message us with your new availability and we'll find and move you into a suitable slot, including checking for earlier cancellations if you want to bring the date forward rather than push it back.
This is often the quicker route because we're actively watching the DVSA system for movement, not just for your practical test but your theory test too.
If you're outside the free window
Missing the three-day cut-off doesn't mean you can't change the test, it just means you'll normally need to pay the £23 fee again for the new booking. There's no way round this if you booked directly with the DVSA and left it late; it's built into their terms.
If this happens, treat it as a prompt to build in more of a buffer next time. Booking your test around a date you're fairly confident about, rather than the earliest slot going, saves money in the long run.
