CBT Explained: What It Is and Why You Need It

Compulsory Basic Training is where almost every rider starts. Here is what it covers, how long it lasts, and how it fits alongside the theory test and full licence.

Compulsory Basic Training, usually just called CBT, is the training day that almost every learner rider completes before going anywhere near the road on L plates. It is run by approved training bodies rather than DVSA directly, and it is not a pass or fail test in the way the theory test or Module 1 and 2 are.

Understanding what CBT actually covers, and where it sits alongside the theory test, helps you plan the right order to tackle everything rather than getting stuck waiting on the wrong step.

    What CBT covers

CBT is structured around five elements: an introduction covering eyesight and basic legal requirements, practical training on the bike off-road, practical riding on-road, and enough riding experience to demonstrate you can handle basic road situations under supervision. It is normally run over a single day, though it can be split across two.

The instructor works with you until they are satisfied you can control the bike safely and handle straightforward road situations. There is no set curriculum you revise for in the way you would for a written test, it is about demonstrating competence on the day.

    • Introduction: eyesight check and legal basics
    • Off-road practical training on the motorcycle or moped
    • Off-road riding exercises until the instructor is satisfied
    • On-road training
    • On-road riding with the instructor

Why CBT comes before riding on L plates

You will normally need to complete CBT before riding a motorcycle or scooter on the road on L plates. It exists to make sure new riders have at least a baseline of machine control and road awareness before being out among other traffic unsupervised.

This is different from the theory test, which can be taken before or after CBT since the two are independent processes booked through different systems.

How long a CBT certificate lasts

A CBT certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed your full motorcycle test within that time, you will need to complete CBT again before continuing to ride on L plates.

For riders working towards a full licence, that two-year window is worth planning around alongside your theory test validity, since both certificates need to still be current when you sit Module 1 and Module 2.

CBT and the theory test: which order?

There is no fixed order requirement between CBT and the theory test. Some riders do CBT first so they can start practising on the road while they revise for theory, others prefer to pass theory first. Either approach works.

What matters is that you have both a current CBT certificate and a valid theory pass before booking Module 1, and that you keep track of the two-year windows on each so neither expires before you finish.

    After CBT: what comes next

Once you have your CBT certificate, you can ride on L plates within the restrictions of your licence category. If your goal is a full licence, the next steps are the theory test, then Module 1 for off-road manoeuvres, then Module 2 for on-road riding.

Many riders use the L-plate period after CBT to build genuine road experience, which pays off directly when it comes to Module 2.

    Frequently asked questions

Is CBT a pass or fail test?

Not in the formal sense. The instructor works with you until they are satisfied you can control the bike safely and handle basic road situations, then issues your certificate. There is no separate written or examined result.

    How long does CBT take?

It is usually completed in a single day, though it can be split over two if needed. The exact length depends on how quickly you demonstrate competence in each of the five elements.

Do I need CBT if I already have a car licence?

Yes. A car licence does not cover motorcycles. You still need CBT before riding a motorcycle or scooter on L plates, regardless of what other licence categories you hold.

How long is a CBT certificate valid?

Two years. If you have not completed your full motorcycle test within that time, you will need to redo CBT before continuing to ride on L plates.

Can I take my theory test before CBT?

Yes. The theory test and CBT are independent, and there is no requirement to complete one before the other. Just make sure both stay valid until you finish Module 1 and Module 2.

Does Fast Track provide CBT training?

Our focus is theory test booking, cancellation checking and revision through the Learning Hub. CBT is delivered by approved training bodies, which is a separate booking from your theory test.

What happens if my CBT expires before I finish my full test?

You will need to complete CBT again before continuing to ride on L plates. It is worth keeping track of your CBT and theory test validity dates so you are not caught out partway through the process.
