A single hour with an approved instructor in the UK typically costs between £35 and £45 in 2026, and Halifax sits inside that range like everywhere else — London and the South East at the top, the North, Wales and Northern Ireland nearer the bottom. What that hourly figure hides is the total: the DVSA has long put the average learner at around 45 hours of professional tuition, which is £1,575 to £2,025 of weekly lessons before you have paid a single test fee.

An intensive course compresses the same hours into days or weeks instead of a year of once-a-week lessons. In practice that means two to four hour sessions, several days a week, with your practical test booked for the end of the block. Learners who go this route usually spend less total time in the car, because almost none of each lesson is wasted re-learning what faded since the last one.

It is not automatically the right choice. Intensive courses reward people who can clear a run of weekday daytime slots and who already have their theory pass in hand — the practical cannot be sat without it. If your diary is unpredictable, a semi-intensive block of two sessions a week is usually the more honest option, and we will say so rather than sell you the biggest course.
