Why that is the answer
When a lane closure is indicated ahead, you should move into the open lane in good time. Merging smoothly allows you to adjust your speed safely without causing sudden braking or traffic congestion behind you. Waiting until the lane ends forces late merging, which creates friction and increases the risk of collisions. The Highway Code advises drivers to obey temporary signs, plan ahead, and merge safely long before the restriction begins.
How this comes up in the real test
