Why that is the answer
The Highway Code states that you must not reverse further than necessary. Reversing is a high-risk manoeuvre because your view is restricted, increasing the risk of a collision with pedestrians or other vehicles. There is no fixed limit like a car's length or a specific street. You should always keep the distance you travel in reverse to the absolute minimum required to complete the manoeuvre safely.
How this comes up in the real test
