What must you fit to your car if you are going to tow a trailer wider than your car?

DVSA-style practice question · Vehicle Loading

    The answer options

    • Rear parking sensors
    • A rear-view camera
    • Exterior towing mirrorsCorrect
    • Projection markers

    Why that is the answer

When towing a trailer or caravan that is wider than your car, standard wing mirrors will not give you a clear view behind. You must fit exterior towing mirrors to ensure you can see clearly along both sides of the trailer and behind you. This is a legal requirement set out in the Highway Code. Cameras or rear sensors cannot legally replace these extended mirrors.

How this comes up in the real test

Questions from vehicle loading appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50, so seven wrong answers is your entire margin. If a whole category is shaky, run the topic practice below until you are getting every question right for the right reason, then go back to full mocks under the clock.
