Why your licence address matters

Your driving licence carries your name and address, and DVLA uses that address for official correspondence, including anything relating to penalty points, medical reviews or licence renewals. If your address is wrong, you may not receive important letters, and in some cases that can cause problems later, for example if DVLA needs to contact you about your licence status.

In lessons, I mostly see this come up around test bookings. Learners occasionally book a theory or practical test using an old address or a slightly different version of their name than what is on their licence. The examiner is not checking where you live for its own sake, but the details need to be consistent enough to confirm you are who you say you are.

Is it actually a legal requirement

Yes. You must tell DVLA when you change your name or address, and this applies to your driving licence as well as any vehicle registration documents for cars you own. Failing to update your driving licence details can lead to a fine if it comes to attention, although the more immediate practical issue is that DVLA correspondence may not reach you.

This is separate from updating your address with your insurer, your bank, or the DVLA vehicle log book (V5C) for a car you own. Each needs to be updated in its own right; changing one does not automatically change the others.

How to update your address

The quickest way is the free GOV.UK online service for changing the address on your driving licence. You will usually need your current driving licence details and your new address. In many cases you do not need to send your paper counterpart or physical documents, but the process will tell you if anything else is required.

A postal application is also possible using the relevant D1 form, but this is generally slower and is mainly needed if you cannot use the online service, for example due to certain licence types or identity verification issues.

Do you get a new photocard

Yes, when you change your address, DVLA issues a new photocard with the updated details, because the address is printed on the card. Your licence number normally stays the same. Keep the old card until the new one arrives, but once the new one is issued, you should use the current version for any official purposes.

If you have recently passed your test and are still getting used to using your full licence, this is a good moment to check every detail on the new card: name spelling, date of birth, address and licence categories, particularly if you passed an automatic or manual test and expect a specific category to be shown.

What this means for learners and test bookings

If you move house while you are learning to drive, update your licence address before booking further tests where possible. Theory and practical test bookings are linked to your licence details, and while a change of address alone is unlikely to block a booked test, keeping your details accurate avoids any doubt if something is later queried.

If you are close to a test date and have just moved, it is usually more important to make sure your photocard licence itself is valid and in your possession than to panic about the exact address matching perfectly on every document. However, do not leave the update indefinitely, since DVLA correspondence about your licence could otherwise go to the wrong address.

Address changes and your car insurance

Your car insurance is priced partly on where the vehicle is normally kept, so moving house without telling your insurer can affect your cover and may even invalidate a claim. This is a completely separate update from your driving licence, and one commonly forgotten by newly qualified drivers moving away for work, study or a new home.

As an instructor, I always remind pupils close to passing that insurance is not just a box to tick before driving away from the test centre. Update your address with your insurer at the same time as DVLA, so both records are accurate from day one in your new home.

Practical tips from lessons

Update your licence address as soon as you move rather than waiting for a convenient moment. It takes a few minutes online and avoids letters going missing later.
