How to book your theory test (and what it costs)

Book directly with GOV.UK, not a third-party site

The only official way to book a UK car theory test is through the GOV.UK website. Search for “book theory test” and make sure the web address starts with gov.uk before you enter any details or payment information.

A number of unofficial websites copy the look of the government service and charge extra for a booking you could make yourself for the standard fee. They are not illegal, but they add cost for no benefit. If a site asks for more than the current fee, or looks like a general search result rather than the gov.uk domain, back out and search again.

What you need before you start

Before you book, have your provisional driving licence number ready. This is the long reference on the front of your provisional licence, and you will be asked for it as part of the booking process.
