Why that is the answer
Increasing the distance between you and the vehicle ahead gives you more time to react if traffic slows down. You can then brake much more gradually, reducing the risk of the tailgater crashing into your rear. Never brake sharply to teach them a lesson, as this dramatically increases the danger of a collision. Highway Code guidance states the hard shoulder must only be used in a genuine emergency, not for tailgaters.
How this comes up in the real test
