Why that is the answer
These white triangular road markings show the approach and slope of a road hump or speed cushion. They help drivers identify the traffic-calming feature in good time so they can adjust their speed smoothly. You will not find these on box junctions, which use yellow criss-cross lines, or at level crossings, which have unique warning symbols and stop lines detailed in the Highway Code.
How this comes up in the real test
Questions from road and traffic signs appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.
