The answer options
- 20mph minimum speed limit
- 20mph maximum speed limit with traffic calmingCorrect
- Only 20 cars allowed to park here
- Only 20 cars can pass at any one time
Why that is the answer
This sign indicates the entrance to a 20mph zone that includes traffic calming features, such as road humps or narrowings, to help keep speeds low. You must not drive faster than 20mph within this area. It does not mean a minimum speed limit, as minimum speeds are indicated by a blue circular sign containing white numbers. Highway Code guidance highlights that these zones aim to protect vulnerable road users.
How this comes up in the real test
Questions from road and traffic signs appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.
The pass mark is 43 out of 50, so seven wrong answers is your entire margin. If a whole category is shaky, run the topic practice below until you are getting every question right for the right reason, then go back to full mocks under the clock.
