Why that is the answer
In dry weather, you should allow at least a two-second time gap between your vehicle and the one in front. Measuring safety margins in time rather than fixed distances ensures your gap automatically increases as your speed increases. Counting car lengths or metres is unreliable and leaves a dangerously short distance at higher speeds, giving you insufficient time to react and stop safely if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly.
