Why that is the answer
After calling for help, you should wait well away from the carriageway and the hard shoulder, ideally up the embankment or behind the safety barrier. Waiting inside your vehicle, next to the phone, or on the hard shoulder is extremely dangerous because straying traffic could collide with your vehicle or you. The Highway Code emphasizes that getting as far from the live lanes as possible provides the best protection from fast-moving traffic.
