Why that is the answer
If you miss your exit on a motorway, you must continue driving to the next exit. Reversing along the carriageway or hard shoulder, or attempting to make a U-turn in the central reservation, is extremely dangerous and strictly illegal. Other drivers travelling at high speeds will not expect a vehicle to stop or move backwards. The Highway Code states you must never reverse on a motorway. Simply carry on to the next junction to turn around safely.
