You are driving on the motorway and begin to feel drowsy. What should you do?

DVSA-style practice question · Hazard Awareness

    The answer options

    • Open the window and stop when it is safe to do soCorrect
    • Speed up so your journey finishes sooner
    • Slow down to let others overtake
    • Stop on the hard shoulder to sleep

    Why that is the answer

Feeling drowsy severely impairs your concentration and reaction times. Official guidance recommends opening a window to supply fresh air as a temporary measure until you can safely leave the motorway or stop at a service area. Never stop on the hard shoulder to rest, as this is extremely dangerous and reserved for emergencies only. Speeding up or just slowing down will not cure fatigue and increases your risk of a collision.

How this comes up in the real test

Questions from hazard awareness appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50, so seven wrong answers is your entire margin. If a whole category is shaky, run the topic practice below until you are getting every question right for the right reason, then go back to full mocks under the clock.
