Why that is the answer
The Highway Code recommends a minimum two-second gap between your vehicle and the one ahead in good, dry conditions. This provides a safe distance to react and stop if the traffic slows suddenly. You must increase this gap when weather conditions worsen. In wet weather, you should double the distance to at least four seconds, and in icy conditions, stopping distances can be up to ten times greater.
How this comes up in the real test
