Before you drive someone else's vehicle, what must you ensure?

DVSA-style practice question · Essential Documents

    The answer options

    • If you are insured to use the vehicleCorrect
    • If the insurance documents are in the vehicle
    • If your own vehicle is insured
    • If your vehicle has third-party cover

    Why that is the answer

It is a legal requirement to be correctly insured before driving any vehicle on a public road. Never assume your own insurance policy allows you to drive someone else's car, as many policies do not include this cover. Even having comprehensive cover on your own vehicle does not automatically entitle you to drive another person's vehicle. Physical insurance documents do not need to be kept inside the car, but valid cover must be active.

How this comes up in the real test

Questions from essential documents appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50, so seven wrong answers is your entire margin. If a whole category is shaky, run the topic practice below until you are getting every question right for the right reason, then go back to full mocks under the clock.
