# A Realistic Theory Test Revision Plan

A structured week-by-week approach beats last-minute cramming. Here's how to plan your revision so both sections are ready together.

Most learners revise the multiple-choice section hard and treat hazard perception as an afterthought, then get caught out by the section they didn't practise properly. A better approach is to run both in parallel from the start, building knowledge and hazard awareness at the same time rather than treating them as separate jobs.

How long you need depends on how much time you can put in each week and how confident you already feel with the Highway Code. As a rough guide, most learners with no prior knowledge need somewhere between three and six weeks of regular, focused revision to feel properly ready, rather than a single weekend of cramming beforehand.

## Week one: build the foundations

Start with the core Highway Code topics: road signs, speed limits, stopping distances, and basic rules of the road. Don't jump straight into full mock tests yet, since you'll just be testing gaps you already know exist. Read through topic by topic and take short quizzes on each one as you go.

Alongside this, watch a handful of hazard perception clips without worrying about scoring yet, just to get used to the format and the pace of developing hazards on screen.

## Weeks two and three: build accuracy

Move into topic-based multiple-choice practice covering vehicle safety, attitude, motorway rules, and vulnerable road users, alongside the basics from week one. Track which topics you're consistently getting wrong and go back to the source material for those specifically, rather than repeating full quizzes that mostly cover things you already know.

Start scoring your hazard perception practice properly during this period, aiming to understand your click timing against the 5-to-0 window rather than just whether you spotted the hazard eventually.

## Weeks four and five: full mock conditions

Start sitting full 50-question mock tests under proper time conditions, and full sets of hazard perception clips scored the same way as the real test. This is where you find out if your knowledge holds up under mild pressure and time constraints, not just in isolated topic quizzes.

Keep a simple log of your scores across sessions rather than judging yourself on one good or bad result. You're looking for a consistent pattern above the pass mark, not a single lucky score.

## Final week before your test

Ease off slightly rather than cramming harder. Revisit only the specific topics you're still shaky on, run one or two full mocks to confirm your scores are holding steady, and stop introducing new material in the final couple of days. Confidence going in matters as much as raw knowledge at this stage.

- Confirm your booking details and test centre location
- Check your photocard provisional licence is easy to find
- Do one final full mock of both sections a day or two before
- Get a proper night's sleep rather than a last late revision session

## Signs you're actually ready

Rather than a fixed number of weeks, use consistent scoring as your real signal. If you're regularly hitting 46 or higher on multiple-choice mocks and 50 or higher on hazard perception across several separate sessions, not just one, you're in a strong position to book with confidence.

## If revision has stalled

If you've booked a test date but revision hasn't gone as planned, it's worth changing the date rather than sitting it underprepared, provided you give the DVSA at least three clear working days' notice to keep it free. A short delay to actually finish preparing properly is far better than paying £23 again for a resit after an avoidable fail.

## Frequently asked questions

How many weeks should I spend revising for the theory test?

Most learners with no prior knowledge need three to six weeks of regular, focused revision, though this depends heavily on how much time you can dedicate each week.

Should I revise multiple-choice or hazard perception first?

Neither exclusively. Running both in parallel from the start tends to work better than finishing one section before starting the other, since you need both ready together.

How do I know if I'm ready to book my test?

Consistent scores of 46 or higher on multiple-choice mocks and 50 or higher on hazard perception mocks, across several sessions rather than a single attempt, are a good sign of readiness.

Is cramming the night before effective?

Not really. A steady revision plan over several weeks builds more reliable knowledge than last-minute cramming, which tends to fall apart under exam pressure.

What should I do in the final week before my test?

Ease off new material, revisit weak topics, run one or two final full mocks, and focus on a good night's sleep rather than extra late revision.

What if I'm not ready by my booked test date?

Change the date with at least three clear working days' notice to keep your fee, rather than sitting the test underprepared and risking a costly resit.

Does Fast Track offer revision resources?

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
