The car theory test is really two separate tests taken back to back, and each one has its own pass mark. You have to clear both in the same sitting; passing one section and failing the other means failing the whole test and paying again to resit both parts. Understanding how the marks work makes revision more focused, because it tells you exactly what margin of error you're working with in each part rather than just aiming vaguely at 'doing well'. ## The multiple-choice pass mark The multiple-choice section has 50 questions covering topics from the Highway Code, road signs, hazard awareness, vehicle safety and more. You have 57 minutes to answer them, and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. That means you can afford to get seven questions wrong and still pass, which is a slightly wider margin than a lot of learners assume. It's not about getting a perfect score, it's about being consistently solid across every topic area rather than excellent in some and shaky in others. ## The hazard perception pass mark The second section is 14 video clips, each containing at least one developing hazard, for a total of 15 scoreable hazards across the set. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75 points. Scoring here works on a sliding scale from 5 down to 0 depending on how early you spot and click a developing hazard. It rewards early, accurate spotting rather than fast reactions alone, and there's a system in place to stop you gaming it by clicking repeatedly, which we cover in more detail on our hazard perception page. ## Why both sections have to be passed together The DVSA treats the theory test as one appointment with two components, not two separate exams you can pass at different times. If you pass the multiple-choice but fail hazard perception, or the other way round, the whole test counts as a fail and you'll need to book and pay for both parts again. This is why it's worth practising hazard perception clips alongside multiple-choice questions right from the start of your revision, rather than leaving it until the week before your test. ## What your result actually looks like You'll get your result at the test centre before you leave, showing your score for both sections and whether you've passed overall. If you pass, you'll be given a pass certificate number, which you'll need when you come to book your practical test, so keep it somewhere safe. ## How close is close enough Aiming for the exact pass mark is risky, because nerves on the day can knock a couple of marks off either section. A more realistic target in practice is to consistently score 46 or higher out of 50 on multiple-choice mocks and 50 or higher out of 75 on hazard perception before you sit the real thing, giving yourself a buffer. ## Frequently asked questions What is the pass mark for the theory test?
