# Green traffic light — UK road sign

A green light means you may go straight ahead or turn, provided your exit road is clear and safe.

A solid green signal indicates you may proceed through the junction, provided your intended route is clear.

Green does not grant an absolute right of way; drivers must always check that the junction is clear of pedestrians and blocked traffic before moving.

## What this sign means

The green signal permits traffic to move straight ahead or turn left or right.

However, it remains subject to general driving safety, priority rules for oncoming vehicles when turning right, and clearance of the junction.

## What to do when you see it

Before proceeding on green:

Key practices:

- Check that the exit road beyond the junction is clear before entering.
- When turning right, yield to oncoming traffic unless you have a dedicated green filter arrow.
- Watch for pedestrians who may still be finishing crossing the road.

## How this sign is tested

Theory questions highlight situations where entering on green is wrong, such as blocking yellow box junctions or entering when the exit is blocked.

Questions also check right-turn priority against oncoming traffic.

## Common mistakes

Driving into an intersection on green when the exit road is blocked by queuing traffic.

Turning right across oncoming traffic assuming green gives total priority.

## Frequently asked questions

Does green mean I must go immediately?

You may go only if the route ahead is clear and it is safe to do so.

Who yields when turning right on a solid green light?

You must yield to oncoming traffic travelling straight ahead or turning left.

What light comes after green?

Green is followed by a single amber light.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
