# Traffic cones and coned tapers — UK road sign

Red and white cones that mark the boundary of a works area and guide traffic across the carriageway.

Cones are the most visible part of any works site. Set in a long angled line, called a taper, they move traffic out of a closed lane and mark the safety zone around the people working.

Cones carry the same authority as a painted line while they are in place.

## What this sign means

The coned area is closed to traffic. The space beyond the cones is a working area, a safety buffer, or both.

Cones with reflective sleeves are used at night and in poor visibility.

## What to do when you see it

Follow the line the cones create and keep out of the closed area.

- Move across before the taper narrows, not alongside it.
- Never drive over or between cones to shortcut a queue.
- Allow extra room, as the running lane will be narrower than usual.
- Watch for site vehicles crossing the cone line at access gaps.

## How this sign is tested

Questions test whether you know that a coned lane must not be used and what the safety zone is for.

Cones also appear in questions about contraflow systems on motorways.

## Common mistakes

Using a coned lane that appears empty in order to pass a queue.

Driving too close to the cone line, which leaves no margin if a wheel clips one.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I drive in a coned off lane if no work is happening?

No. The lane is closed whether or not you can see workers.

What is the safety zone?

The gap between the running lane and the work area, kept empty to protect the workforce.

Why are lanes narrower in a contraflow?

Space is taken by the works, so lane widths are reduced and speed limits are lowered to match.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
