# Single yellow line — UK road sign

One yellow line along the kerb means waiting is banned during the times shown on the nearby plate.

A single yellow line painted along the edge of the carriageway means waiting is prohibited during specified hours. The hours themselves are never on the line, they are shown on a small upright plate at the kerb.

Outside the signed hours you may park normally unless another restriction applies.

## What this sign means

Waiting is banned during the times on the plate. Loading and unloading is usually still allowed unless kerb blips say otherwise.

If no plate is visible, look further along the street. Plates are placed at intervals along a controlled length.

## What to do when you see it

Check the plate before you leave the vehicle.

- Read the days and times shown on the nearest plate.
- Do not wait during the restricted hours, even with someone in the car.
- Look for yellow kerb blips, which restrict loading as well.
- Never park on a yellow line where it would obstruct a junction or crossing.

## How this sign is tested

Questions test whether you know the times are on a plate rather than implied by the line, and that a single line is time limited rather than permanent.

There are also questions about the difference between waiting and loading restrictions.

## Common mistakes

Assuming a single yellow line always means no parking at any time.

Sitting in the car with the engine running during restricted hours, which still counts as waiting.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I park on a single yellow line in the evening?

Only if the times on the plate have ended. Always check the plate.

Does waiting include staying in the vehicle?

Yes. Waiting means the vehicle is stationary, whether or not the driver is present.

Can I load on a single yellow line?

Usually yes, unless yellow kerb marks show a loading ban.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
