# No vehicles — UK road sign

This circular red sign prohibits all vehicles, both motor-driven and non-motorised, from entering a road.

Image: No vehicles — red, white and black circle UK road sign (https://fasttrackdrivinglessons.co.uk/signs/no-vehicles.svg)

A completely plain white circle enclosed within a solid red outer ring signifies that all vehicles are prohibited from entering the street.

Unlike signs depicting specific vehicle silhouettes, an empty red ring applies universally to cars, motorcycles, heavy goods vehicles, and pedal cycles.

## What this sign means

This sign establishes a strict prohibition against all vehicular traffic entering the designated route.

Unless a plate below indicates exceptions (e.g. 'Except for access'), no vehicle may cross beyond the sign position.

- Red ring with a plain white centre.
- Applies to motor vehicles, motorcycles, and pedal cycles.
- Used for pedestrian areas, park roads, or structurally unsafe bridges.

## What to do when you see it

Do not proceed past the sign on a bicycle, motorcycle, or car.

Select an alternative route around the restricted area unless you are a pedestrian pushing a bicycle.

## How this sign is tested

DVSA theory test questions frequently ask candidates to identify which traffic types are banned by a blank red circle.

A common trick question tests whether pedal cycles are allowed past this sign (they are prohibited).

## Common mistakes

Many candidates mistakenly believe the sign only applies to motor vehicles and assume bicycles are allowed.

Others confuse it with 'No Entry' (the red disc with a horizontal white bar) or speed limit signs.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Are bicycles allowed past a 'No Vehicles' sign?

No, pedal bicycles are classifiable vehicles and are strictly banned unless an exception plate is displayed.

What is the difference between 'No Vehicles' and 'No Entry'?

'No Entry' prevents entry from one direction on a two-way/one-way street, while 'No Vehicles' bans traffic in both directions.

Can hand-pushed wheelchairs enter a No Vehicles zone?

Yes, pedestrians and mobility equipment users are permitted.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
