# No trams — UK road sign

A red-ringed circle with a tram symbol, prohibiting trams from the route beyond.

A tram symbol inside a red ring prohibits trams. It is a rare sign, used where a road runs close to a tramway but is not part of it.

For the theory test its value is as a clean example of the red ring rule.

## What this sign means

Trams must not proceed beyond the sign. All prohibition signs use a red ring, and the symbol inside states what is banned.

Sometimes a plate limits the prohibition to certain hours.

## What to do when you see it

For most drivers no action is required, but recognise the pattern.

- Read the red ring as prohibition regardless of the symbol.
- Look for a plate that limits the restriction by time.
- Do not confuse it with the triangular tram warning.
- Expect tram routes nearby.

## How this sign is tested

The DVSA uses less common prohibition signs to check whether candidates have learnt the system rather than memorised individual signs.

## Common mistakes

Reading any tram sign as a warning of trams ahead.

Missing the diagonal bar convention on some prohibition signs.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

What does a red ring always mean?

Prohibition. Something is not allowed.

Is this sign common?

No, it appears only near tram networks.

How is it different from the tram triangle?

The triangle warns. The circle prohibits.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
