# Level crossing flashing red light signals — UK road sign

Twin red lamps that flash alternately at a railway crossing, meaning stop and wait for the train.

At most protected level crossings a light signal unit is mounted beside the road. A single steady amber lamp shows first, then two red lamps flash alternately until it is safe to cross.

The flashing red pair is a legal stop signal and driving past it is an offence as well as a serious safety risk.

## What this sign means

Steady amber means stop unless you are already so close to the crossing that stopping would be unsafe. Flashing red means stop and do not cross under any circumstances.

An audible alarm sounds at many crossings while the lights are showing, and half barriers will lower shortly after the reds begin.

## What to do when you see it

Stop behind the white line and wait. The lights control the crossing, not the barriers.

- Stop at the white line on amber or red.
- Wait for the red lights to go out, not just for the barrier to move.
- Expect a second train if the reds continue flashing after one has passed.
- Do not creep forward while waiting.

## How this sign is tested

The most common question describes a train that has just gone through while the red lights carry on flashing, and asks what you should do. The answer is always to continue waiting.

Others test whether you know that amber at a level crossing does not carry the same meaning as amber at a junction.

## Common mistakes

Moving off the moment a train clears the crossing without checking the signals.

Following the vehicle in front over the line without confirming the lights for yourself.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Are the red lights at a level crossing a legal order?

Yes. Failing to stop is an offence and carries penalty points as well as a fine.

What if the lights come on while I am on the crossing?

Keep going and clear the crossing straight away.

Why is there an alarm as well as lights?

The alarm alerts pedestrians and drivers who may not be looking directly at the signal head.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
