# Give way line — UK road sign

Give way lines across a junction show where you must yield priority to traffic on the main road.

Give way lines consist of transverse dashed white lines painted across the road at junctions, often accompanied by a painted upright triangle on the approach.

Unlike a solid stop line, you do not always need to bring your vehicle to a complete stop if the road ahead is completely clear.

## What this sign means

A give way line marks the boundary where your road joins a major road or roundabout. It indicates that traffic on the main road has priority over you.

The double broken white line tells you that you must give way to traffic on the main carriageway before crossing or joining it.

- Double broken line: Give way to traffic on the main road.
- Single broken line: Found at minor junctions or mini-roundabouts.
- Triangle painted on road: Warns of an approaching give way marking.

## What to do when you see it

Approach the junction at a safe speed, looking early in both directions to assess approaching traffic.

If the junction is open and clear, you may emerge safely without stopping. If traffic is approaching, stop behind the broken lines until a safe gap appears.

## How this sign is tested

Theory test questions often ask whether stopping is mandatory at a give way line. Candidates must know that stopping is only required if traffic is approaching.

In hazard perception and practical driving tests, failing to look early or crossing the line into the path of priority traffic results in a serious fault.

## Common mistakes

Learners frequently make mistakes at give way markings by failing to scan early enough on approach.

Common errors include treating a give way line as a stop line by halting when the road is totally clear, or rolling over the line into the path of oncoming traffic.

## Frequently asked questions

Do I have to stop completely at a give way line?

No. You only need to stop if there is approaching traffic on the main road that requires you to give way.

What is the difference between a give way line and a stop line?

A stop line is solid and legally requires you to halt completely. A give way line is broken and allows you to proceed if clear.

Which vehicle has priority at an unmarked junction?

Neither driver has official priority at an unmarked junction, so both should proceed with extreme caution.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
