# End of road works and any temporary restrictions — UK road sign

A plain sign confirming that the works are behind you and normal rules apply again.

This sign marks the end of a works site. It confirms that temporary speed limits, lane restrictions and any other temporary orders no longer apply from that point.

It is deliberately plain so that it is not mistaken for a new instruction.

## What this sign means

All temporary restrictions associated with the works have ended. The permanent speed limit for that road applies again.

The sign does not itself set a speed limit, so you need to know what the normal limit for the road is.

## What to do when you see it

Return to normal driving, but only when the road ahead genuinely allows it.

- Resume the permanent speed limit for that road, not a speed of your choosing.
- Check mirrors before accelerating away, as traffic may still be bunched.
- Watch for vehicles rejoining from the works exit.
- Look for repeater signs to confirm the permanent limit.

## How this sign is tested

Questions check that you understand the sign ends restrictions but does not set a new limit, so you must know the default limit for the road type.

It is often paired with questions about national speed limits.

## Common mistakes

Assuming the national speed limit applies on any road once the works end, when the permanent limit may be much lower.

Accelerating hard the moment the sign passes while traffic ahead is still in the works layout.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Does this sign set a speed limit?

No. It ends temporary restrictions and returns the road to its permanent limit.

How do I know the permanent limit?

Look for repeater signs, or use the presence of street lighting as an indicator of a 30 mph limit unless signed otherwise.

Does it end lane closures too?

Yes, it ends the temporary traffic order for the works as a whole.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
