# Double yellow lines — UK road sign

Two yellow lines along the kerb mean no waiting at any time, on any day of the year.

Double yellow lines are the strongest routine parking control in Britain. They mean no waiting at any time and they do not need a plate to be enforceable.

They are used where a parked vehicle would block sightlines or narrow the road dangerously.

## What this sign means

Waiting is prohibited at all times, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

The restriction is no waiting, not simply no parking. Parking suggests leaving the vehicle, whereas waiting covers any stationary vehicle, including sitting at the kerb with the engine running. The only routine exceptions are setting down or picking up passengers, and loading where it is permitted.

Loading and unloading may still be permitted unless yellow marks on the kerb show a loading ban.

## What to do when you see it

Find another place to stop. There is no time of day when parking here is allowed.

- Do not park, even briefly, on double yellow lines.
- Blue Badge holders may park for up to three hours in most areas, with the badge and clock displayed, unless loading is banned.
- Check the kerb for blips before loading.
- Never park on double yellows near a school entrance or junction.

## How this sign is tested

Questions test that double yellow lines need no accompanying plate and apply at all times.

Some questions cover the loading exception and Blue Badge concessions.

## Common mistakes

Believing that double yellow lines stop applying after shops close.

Confusing yellow kerb blips, which control loading, with the lines themselves, which control waiting.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Frequently asked questions

Do double yellow lines need a sign showing times?

No. They apply at all times without a plate.

Can I stop briefly to drop someone off?

Setting down or picking up passengers is generally allowed, but you must not wait.

Can Blue Badge holders park on double yellows?

In most areas yes, for up to three hours, provided loading is not also banned.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
