# Buses and cycles only — UK road sign

A blue circle showing a bus and a cycle, meaning the road ahead is reserved for those users.

A blue circle gives a positive instruction. When it carries a bus and a cycle it means the route ahead is for those vehicles only, and all other traffic must find another way.

It is used at bus gates, on town centre links and at the entrances to bus only roads.

## What this sign means

Only buses and pedal cycles may use the road beyond the sign. Cars, vans and motorcycles must not enter.

Some sites add taxis or permit holders on a plate.

## What to do when you see it

Turn away unless you are driving a bus or riding a cycle.

- Do not follow a bus through a bus gate.
- Look for the alternative route signed nearby.
- Expect automatic camera enforcement.
- Watch for cyclists using the full lane beyond the sign.

## How this sign is tested

Questions test the meaning of blue circles as mandatory instructions rather than information.

Bus gates are a favourite scenario because the road looks open.

## Common mistakes

Treating a blue circle as advice because it is not red.

Following the car in front through a bus gate and receiving the same penalty they do.

## Test yourself on this one

Road and traffic signs is the biggest category in the question bank with 102 questions, and signs turn up inside other categories too. Work through them free, no sign-up needed.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
