# UK road signs explained

Road and traffic signs is the largest single category in the theory test question bank. Once you can read a sign by its shape and colour you can work out most answers even when you have never seen that exact sign before. Each page below explains what the sign means, what you have to do at the wheel, and how examiners test it.

## Browse signs by category

We group signs the same way the DVSA and the Highway Code do, so you can revise one category at a time.

[

### Warning signs

Triangular signs with a red border that tell you what is coming up on the road ahead.

2 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/warning-signs)[

### Regulatory signs

Circular signs that give orders. Red rings prohibit; blue circles compel.

4 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/regulatory-signs)[

### Speed limit signs

Circular signs that set the maximum legal speed for the road.

2 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/speed-limit-signs)[

### Road markings

Painted lines, symbols and coloured surfaces that work with signs to control traffic.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/road-markings)[

### Motorway signs, signals and road markings

Blue-background signs and signals used on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/motorway-signs)[

### Information signs

Rectangular signs that tell you about the road layout, services and facilities.

2 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/information-signs)[

### Traffic signals

Light signals at junctions, crossings and roadworks that tell you when to stop and go.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/traffic-signals)[

### Level crossing signs and signals

Signs, signals and road markings that warn of and protect railway crossings.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/level-crossings)[

### Signs for road works and temporary situations

Temporary signs and cones that change the normal rules while work is carried out.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/road-works)[

### On-street parking control

Signs and road markings that show where and when you can and cannot park.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/parking-control)[

### Pedestrian, cycle and equestrian crossings

Signs, signals and markings for zebra, pelican, puffin, toucan and equestrian crossings.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/crossings)[

### Pedestrian zone signs

Signs that restrict or control vehicle access in pedestrian-only areas.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/pedestrian-zones)[

### Bus and cycle signs

Signs that mark bus lanes, cycle lanes and shared-use routes.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/bus-cycle-signs)[

### Direction signs on all-purpose roads

Green, white and brown signs that point you towards destinations and junctions.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/direction-signs)[

### Direction signs for cyclists and pedestrians

Blue and white signs that guide cyclists and pedestrians along routes and crossings.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/direction-cyclists-pedestrians)[

### Low bridge signs

Signs and markings that warn of height restrictions ahead.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/low-bridge)[

### Tram signs

Signs, signals and road markings that warn of and control tram routes.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/tram-signs)[

### Tidal flow lane control

Signals and markings that change which lanes carry traffic at different times of day.

0 signs covered ](/theory/road-signs/category/tidal-flow)[

### Traffic calming

Signs and road features that slow traffic in residential and village areas.

### The signing system

How UK traffic signs are organised by shape, colour and purpose.

### Miscellaneous signs

Signs that do not fit the main categories but still appear in the theory test.

## Warning signs

[View all](/theory/road-signs/category/warning-signs)

Red-bordered triangle. Heavy exam focus.

[

![Crossroads ahead sign — red, white and black triangle UK road sign](/signs/crossroads-ahead.svg "Crossroads ahead")

### Crossroads ahead sign

A warning triangle showing a plus-shaped junction, and one of the signs the theory test uses to check you understand priority in advance.

](/theory/road-signs/crossroads-ahead)[

![Roundabout ahead sign — red, white and black triangle UK road sign](/signs/roundabout-ahead.svg "Roundabout ahead")

### Roundabout ahead sign

Three curved arrows in a triangle, warning you to prepare well before you actually reach the give way line.

](/theory/road-signs/roundabout-ahead)

## Regulatory signs

[View all](/theory/road-signs/category/regulatory-signs)

Circle. Heavy exam focus.

[

### Stop sign

The only sign in the UK with eight sides, and the only one where slowing down isn't good enough.

](/theory/road-signs/stop)[

### Give way sign

An inverted triangle that asks for judgement, not a guaranteed stop, and that's exactly why it trips learners up.

](/theory/road-signs/give-way)[

### No entry sign

A solid red circle with a white bar, and one of the few signs where breaking the rule can quickly become dangerous, not just illegal.

](/theory/road-signs/no-entry)[

### No waiting sign

A red X on a blue circle that stops learners more in the DVSA test than any parking-related question deserves to.

](/theory/road-signs/no-waiting)

## Speed limit signs

[View all](/theory/road-signs/category/speed-limit-signs)

Circle with red border. Heavy exam focus.

[

![National speed limit sign — white and black circle UK road sign](/signs/national-speed-limit.svg "National speed limit sign")

### National speed limit sign

A plain white circle with a black diagonal stripe that hides one of the most misunderstood rules in the whole Highway Code.

](/theory/road-signs/national-speed-limit-applies)[

![30 mph speed limit sign — red, white and black circle UK road sign](/signs/30-mph-speed-limit-sign.svg "30 mph speed limit sign")

### 30 mph speed limit sign

The most common speed limit in built-up Britain, and one the theory test expects you to recognise even without a sign present.

](/theory/road-signs/30-mph-speed-limit)

## Information signs

[View all](/theory/road-signs/category/information-signs)

Rectangle. Medium exam focus.

[

### One way traffic sign

A blue rectangle with a white arrow that tells you far more about lane behaviour than most learners realise.

](/theory/road-signs/one-way-traffic)[

![Mini-roundabout sign — blue and white circle UK road sign](/signs/mini-roundabout.svg "Mini-roundabout sign")

### Mini-roundabout sign

A small blue circle with three white arrows that governs a junction far more compact, and often more confusing, than a full-size roundabout.

](/theory/road-signs/mini-roundabout)

## Learn the shapes, not just the signs

Circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform. Red rings mean prohibition, blue circles mean something is compulsory, and green backgrounds mean primary routes. Get that framework straight and the sign questions in the theory test stop being memory work.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
