# Vulnerable Road Users — free theory test practice

This band reflects the Highway Code hierarchy of road users: the more damage your vehicle can do, the more responsibility you carry. Questions focus on the space and time you must give to people who are not protected by a metal shell.

Cyclists and motorcyclists appear most often, particularly at junctions, in filtering traffic, and when you are overtaking or turning left across their path.

## What the DVSA tests on vulnerable road users

-   Passing distances for cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians in the road
-   Blind spots and shoulder checks before turning or changing lane
-   Pedestrian crossing types and who has priority at each
-   Children near schools, ice-cream vans and residential streets
-   Older, disabled and learner drivers, and how to give them room

## Common mistakes in this topic

-   Overtaking a cyclist just before turning left across them
-   Passing a horse at speed or sounding the horn to warn the rider
-   Failing to check the nearside blind spot before moving off
-   Assuming a pedestrian waiting at a zebra crossing must give way to you
