# When is it not permitted to sound your vehicle's horn?

DVSA-style practice question · Safety and your Vehicle

## The answer options

- At any time in a built-up area
- Between 10pm and 6am in a built-up area
- Between 11:30pm and 6am on any road
- Between 11:30pm and 7am in a built-up area**Correct**

## Why that is the answer

According to the Highway Code, you must not sound your horn in a built-up area between 11:30 pm and 7:00 am unless another road user poses an immediate danger. This rule exists to prevent sleep disturbance in residential zones. Drivers often confuse the timings with 10 pm or think the ban applies to all roads, but the law specifically restricts horn use in built-up areas during these night-time hours.

## How this comes up in the real test

Questions from safety and your vehicle appear throughout the 50-question multiple-choice section, and the wording changes between versions. Learn the rule rather than the sentence: the DVSA can ask the same point from the opposite direction, and a memorised answer falls over the moment the phrasing moves.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50, so seven wrong answers is your entire margin. If a whole category is shaky, run the topic practice below until you are getting every question right for the right reason, then go back to full mocks under the clock.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
