## The UK theory test, explained by instructors

### What the theory test actually is

The UK car theory test is two parts taken in one sitting at a DVSA theory test centre. First comes the multiple-choice section: 50 questions in 57 minutes, drawn from the DVSA question bank, including a case study that puts several questions inside one realistic scenario. Then, after a short optional break, comes hazard perception: 14 video clips containing 15 scoreable developing hazards.

You have to pass both halves in the same attempt. Score 43 out of 50 on the questions but miss the hazard perception mark and the whole test is a fail — you sit both parts again. That is the single most common thing learners are surprised by, and it is why we treat hazard perception as half the job rather than an afterthought.

### The pass marks, and what they mean in practice

The multiple-choice pass mark is 43 out of 50, which allows seven wrong answers. Hazard perception is 44 out of 75. Those thresholds have been stable for years, but the DVSA is the only source worth checking if you want to be certain on the day you book.

Seven wrong answers sounds generous until you sit a mock and find that four of them were road signs you had never looked at properly. The practical implication is that you cannot afford a weak category. Scoring 100 per cent on rules of the road will not rescue a blank on vehicle loading.

### Hazard perception: how the scoring really works

A developing hazard is something that would make you change speed or direction — a car edging out of a side road, a pedestrian stepping towards a kerb, a cyclist wobbling past parked cars. You click when you see it developing, and the earlier you click within the scoring window the more points you get, on a sliding five-to-zero scale.

Clicking constantly to cover yourself does not work. The system detects a repeated clicking pattern and scores that clip zero, and there is no way to retake a single clip. Scan the whole frame — pavements, junctions, mirrors within the clip — and click once when something genuinely starts to develop, then a second time to confirm if you are unsure.

### A revision plan that fits around lessons

Twenty minutes a day beats three hours on a Sunday. Road signs and stopping distances stick through repetition, not through intensity. Start by running one practice test cold to find your weakest three categories, then read the Highway Code sections behind those categories rather than re-answering questions you already get right.

Two weeks before your test date, move to timed full mocks so the clock stops being a distraction. If you are consistently scoring 47 or better on the questions and comfortably over the hazard perception mark across several sessions, you are ready.

### Booking, fees and what to take

You book the theory test through GOV.UK. The car theory test fee is £23 at the time of writing in 2026 and is paid to the DVSA, not to us — third-party sites charging more for the same booking are simply adding a fee. You need your provisional driving licence number to book, and you must bring the photocard licence itself to the centre.

Arrive early enough to go through security calmly. Phones, watches and bags go in a locker. If you have a reading difficulty, a disability or English is not your first language, ask about the support available when you book rather than on the day — extra time and an English-language voiceover have to be arranged in advance.

### After you pass

Your theory certificate is valid for two years. If you have not passed your practical test within that window you sit the theory again, and the DVSA does not grant extensions. Given how long practical test slots can take to come up, the sensible move is to pass the theory early and start the practical clock straight away.

A theory pass is also what makes an intensive course workable. We cannot book a practical test date for you without one, so learners who pass the theory first get a far better choice of course dates.

### Once the theory is done

A theory pass is what lets us book your practical test date, which is why intensive courses only work properly once it is behind you.

## Theory test questions, answered

### How much does the theory test cost?

The car theory test fee is £23 in 2026, paid to the DVSA when you book through GOV.UK. Any site charging more is adding its own booking fee on top.

### What are the theory test pass marks?

43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice section and 44 out of 75 on hazard perception. You must reach both in the same sitting or you retake the whole test.

### How long is a theory test pass valid?

Two years from the date you pass. If your practical test has not been taken by then, the theory has to be sat again — there are no extensions.

### How soon can I retake a failed theory test?

You must wait at least three clear working days before sitting the theory test again, and you pay the fee each time.

### Is the theory test different for automatic learners?

No. The theory test is identical whichever transmission you learn in. The manual or automatic distinction only applies to the practical test and the licence it produces.

### Can I use practice questions instead of the Highway Code?

Use both. Practice questions find your weak spots quickly, but the Highway Code teaches the rule behind the question, which is what lets you answer a version you have not seen before.

### Do I need to pass the theory before starting driving lessons?

No. You can start practical lessons with just a provisional licence. You only need the theory pass before you can book the practical test.

### Is this practice free?

Yes. All 694 questions and both mock tests are free to use with no sign-up. Creating an account only adds progress tracking, streaks and badges.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
