Here is what AM, A1, A2 and full category A actually mean. Motorcycle licensing in the UK is split into categories based on the size and power of machine you are entitled to ride, and each category has its own minimum age. Knowing which one applies to you before you start booking tests avoids wasted time and money on the wrong route. This page sets out the four main categories, AM, A1, A2 and A, what each allows, the age limits involved, and how progressive access lets some riders reach full category A earlier than the standard direct access age. ## Category AM: mopeds Category AM covers mopeds and is available from age 16. It is the entry point for riders who want to get moving on two wheels at the earliest legal age, typically on a small-capacity moped with a limited top speed. AM has its own practical test structure separate from A1, A2 and A, reflecting the lower speeds and simpler machines involved. ## Category A1: light motorcycles Category A1 is available from age 17 and covers light motorcycles, generally up to a set engine capacity and power limit. It is a common route for 17-year-olds who want to progress beyond a moped straight onto a proper motorcycle. Passing your theory test and both practical modules on an A1-eligible machine gives you A1 entitlement, which then forms the basis for progressing to A2 later on. ## Category A2: mid-size motorcycles Category A2 becomes available at age 19 and covers a wider range of motorcycles with higher power output than A1, though still capped below full unrestricted machines. Many riders move to A2 as their next step after A1, or start directly at A2 if they are old enough and did not hold A1 first. A2 is also the route into progressive access towards full category A, since two years of holding an A2 licence opens up an earlier path to category A than waiting for direct access. ## Category A: full access Full category A removes the power restrictions of A1 and A2, giving access to any motorcycle. There are two routes in: direct access, available from age 24, where you take your test on a full-power machine, and progressive access, available from age 21, for riders who have held an A2 licence for at least two years. Progressive access from A2 to A does not require a further theory test in most cases, though it does require a further practical test, Module 1 and Module 2, on a machine meeting the category A requirements. - AM: mopeds, from age 16 - A1: light motorcycles, from age 17 - A2: mid-size motorcycles, from age 19 - A: full access, direct at 24, or progressive at 21 after two years on A2 ## How the theory test fits across categories A theory test pass is generally valid across the motorcycle categories within its two-year window, so moving from A1 to A2, for example, does not automatically require a fresh theory test if your existing pass is still valid and applies to the category you are progressing into. Rules can vary depending on individual circumstances, so it is worth checking your specific situation on GOV.UK before assuming your existing theory pass carries over. ## Choosing the right category for you Your age is the main factor, but so is what you actually plan to ride. There is no requirement to go through every category in sequence if you are already old enough for a higher one; a 24-year-old, for example, can go straight for full category A via direct access without passing through A1 or A2 first.
