# Motorcycle Hazard Perception: What to Expect

The hazard perception section catches a lot of riders out. Here is how it works, why it is riding-specific, and how to prepare for it properly.

[![Side road ahead on the left — official UK road sign](/signs/side-road-left.svg "Side road ahead on the left")Side road ahead on the left ](/theory/road-signs/side-road-left)

The hazard perception section is the second half of your motorcycle theory test, sat straight after the 50 multiple-choice questions in the same appointment. It consists of 14 video clips filmed from a road user's point of view, each containing at least one developing hazard that you need to respond to as it unfolds.

It catches out plenty of riders who assume it is simply about spotting obvious danger. In practice it is about timing, responding early to a hazard as it develops rather than only once it is fully obvious, and understanding that the clips are built around riding-specific situations rather than generic road hazards.

## How the test is scored

Each of the 14 clips contains at least one scoreable hazard, and one clip contains two, giving a maximum of 15 scoreable hazards across the test. Each hazard is scored out of five points, so the maximum possible score is 75, and you need 44 to pass.

You score higher by clicking earlier in the window during which the hazard is developing. Click too late and you score lower; click too early or too often across a clip and the system can flag it and score you zero for that hazard, since it looks like random clicking rather than genuine hazard spotting.

## Why the clips are motorcycle-specific

The clips used in the motorcycle theory test are drawn from a separate bank to the car test, filmed and selected to reflect situations that matter specifically to riders: a car pulling out of a side road without seeing an approaching bike, a vehicle changing lanes without checking a blind spot where a motorcyclist could be, or road surface hazards that affect two wheels more than four.

This is one of the clearest examples of why revising with car-focused hazard perception materials falls short. The situations, and the visual cues that signal a developing hazard, are built around a rider's experience of the road.

## Common mistakes

The most common mistake is treating the test like a game and clicking constantly through a clip hoping to catch the moment, which the system is designed to detect and penalise. The second most common mistake is only reacting once a hazard is completely obvious, which scores far fewer points than an earlier, well-timed response.

A third mistake is not practising with genuine motorcycle clips at all, and instead assuming general road awareness from driving or general riding experience will be enough on the day.

- Clicking repeatedly through a clip (can score zero for that hazard)
- Reacting only once a hazard is fully obvious
- Skipping motorcycle-specific practice clips
- Not knowing that one clip contains two scoreable hazards

## How to prepare properly

Practise with genuine motorcycle hazard perception clips rather than generic or car-focused material, so you get used to the specific visual language the test uses, road users' body language, vehicle positioning, changes in road surface, that signal a hazard is about to develop.

Watch full clips at normal speed rather than slowing them down, since the test itself runs in real time and part of what is being assessed is your reaction under realistic conditions. Review clips you find difficult more than once, paying attention to exactly when the scoring window opens and closes.

## Where our Learning Hub fits in

Full Membership includes access to the Learning Hub, which covers motorcycle hazard perception practice alongside the multiple-choice question bank, so your revision reflects what you will actually be tested on rather than generic material.

We also offer a dedicated hazard perception practice area if you want to focus specifically on that part of the test.

## Frequently asked questions

How many hazards can I score across the 14 clips?

There are 15 scoreable hazards in total, since one of the 14 clips contains two. Each is worth up to five points, giving a maximum possible score of 75.

What is the pass mark for hazard perception?

44 out of 75. You need to pass both this section and the multiple-choice section in the same sitting to pass the theory test overall.

Will I be penalised for clicking too much?

Yes. Clicking repeatedly throughout a clip is treated as an attempt to guess rather than genuinely spot the hazard, and can result in a score of zero for that clip's hazard.

Are motorcycle hazard perception clips different from the car test?

Yes. They are drawn from a separate, motorcycle-specific bank designed around situations and viewpoints relevant to riders, so preparing with car-focused material will leave gaps.

Can I retake just the hazard perception part if I fail?

No. If you fail either the multiple-choice section or the hazard perception section, you need to retake the full theory test, both parts together, in a new sitting.

How can I practise for hazard perception effectively?

Use genuine motorcycle-specific clips, watch them at normal speed, and review any you find difficult more than once. Our Learning Hub, included in Full Membership, gives you access to this kind of practice material.

Does slowing down practice clips help?

Not much, since the real test runs at normal speed and part of what is assessed is your reaction time under realistic conditions. Practising at normal speed better reflects what you will face on the day.

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
