# Module 1 and Module 2: The Practical Motorcycle Tests

Once your theory test is passed, Module 1 and Module 2 are the two practical stages standing between you and a full motorcycle licence. Here is what each one involves.

Once you have passed your motorcycle theory test, the next stage on the way to a full licence is the practical test, split into two separate parts: Module 1 and Module 2. Both are run by DVSA and need to be booked and passed within the two-year validity of your theory certificate.

The split exists because motorcycle riding skill genuinely divides into two distinct things: precise low-speed machine control, tested off-road in Module 1, and judgement and observation in real traffic, tested on-road in Module 2. You cannot book Module 2 until you have passed Module 1.

## Module 1: off-road manoeuvres

Module 1 takes place on an off-road manoeuvring area and focuses on your control of the machine at low and higher speeds. You will be asked to carry out a series of set exercises, and the examiner is checking for smoothness, balance and correct technique throughout.

This part tends to feel mechanical compared with the flowing nature of on-road riding, which is exactly why it is separated out: it lets an examiner assess pure machine control without the variability of live traffic.

- Wheeling the machine and using the stand
- Slow riding and slalom or figure-of-eight control
- Slow-speed U-turn
- Cornering and controlled stops
- Emergency stop
- Hazard avoidance exercise

## Module 2: on-road riding

Module 2 takes place on real roads, with the examiner following at a distance either on another motorcycle or in a following car, keeping in contact with you by radio. You will be asked to ride independently for periods, including following directions from a sat-nav-style device in some tests, and to demonstrate a couple of set exercises such as a controlled stop.

The examiner is assessing your observation, positioning, judgement of hazards and general control in the kind of situations you will meet every time you ride: junctions, roundabouts, changing traffic conditions, and interaction with other road users.

## How Module 1 and Module 2 relate to your theory pass

You need a valid theory test pass to book either module, and that certificate needs to remain valid, within its two-year window, until you complete Module 2. If your theory certificate expires before you finish both modules, you will need to sit the theory test again.

There is no requirement to rush both modules immediately after your theory pass, but leaving a long gap increases the risk of running out of time on the two-year validity, particularly if you need a resit on either module.

## Booking order and timing

Module 1 must be booked and passed before Module 2 can be booked. Many riders leave a gap between the two to build confidence and road experience on L plates, while others prefer to take them close together while the skills from training are fresh.

Either approach is reasonable. What matters is keeping your CBT and theory test validity in mind, and giving yourself enough practice time before each module that you are not sitting it under-prepared.

## Licence category and which machine you use

The category you are testing for, A1, A2 or A, determines the size and power of machine you use for your test, and the licence entitlement you gain on passing. Age restrictions apply to each category, and A2 riders can progress to full A access after two years via progressive access rather than waiting until 24.

Check your own eligibility on GOV.UK before booking, since the right category depends on your age and riding history.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I book Module 2 before passing Module 1?

No. Module 1 must be passed first, since it is treated as a prerequisite for booking Module 2. The two are always taken in that order.

What happens if I fail Module 1?

You can rebook and retake it after the standard waiting period DVSA applies between attempts. There is no limit on the number of times you can resit, but each attempt needs to be booked and paid for separately.

Do I need my theory test pass for both modules?

Yes. A valid theory certificate is required to book both Module 1 and Module 2, and it must remain within its two-year validity until you complete Module 2.

How long does Module 2 take?

It typically runs for around 40 minutes of road riding including set exercises, though exact timings can vary slightly by test centre and examiner.

Is Module 1 harder than Module 2?

They test different skills rather than one being definitively harder. Module 1 demands precise machine control at low speed, while Module 2 demands judgement and observation in live traffic.

Can Fast Track help me book Module 1 and Module 2?

Our service is focused on the theory test, booking it, checking for cancellations and providing revision through the Learning Hub. Our cancellation checker also covers practical test slots.

What if my theory certificate expires before I finish Module 2?

You will need to sit and pass the theory test again before you can continue with Module 1 or Module 2. Keeping track of the two-year validity window avoids this.

## Passed your theory? Get the practical booked

Your theory certificate lasts two years. Most learners who use it quickly do it with an intensive course — a block of hours with a DVSA approved instructor and a practical test at the end, instead of one lesson a week for months.
