Cancelling a theory test is straightforward, but the timing of when you do it decides whether you get your money back. The DVSA runs a fixed notice period, and missing it by even a day means losing the £23 fee entirely rather than getting any of it refunded. This page covers cancelling a test booked directly with the DVSA and a test booked through us, along with what to do afterwards if you still need to take the test at some point. If you're not sure whether to cancel outright or just move the date, it's usually better to change it rather than cancel, since changing keeps your existing fee attached to a new appointment instead of losing it altogether. ## The three clear working days rule To cancel for a full refund, you need to give the DVSA at least three clear working days' notice before your test date. Working days run Monday to Friday and exclude bank holidays, and the day of cancellation and the day of the test itself don't count towards the total. Cancel later than that and the DVSA keeps the fee. There are no automatic exceptions for illness or emergencies through the standard process, though in genuinely exceptional circumstances you can contact the DVSA directly to explain the situation. ## How to cancel a test booked with the DVSA Sign in to the official theory test service on GOV.UK using your booking reference and driving licence number, then follow the cancellation option through to confirmation. You'll receive an email confirming the cancellation and, where you're within the free window, confirming the refund. Refunds are paid back to the card used for booking and can take a few working days to appear, so don't worry if it isn't instant. ## Cancelling a test we booked for you If your theory test was booked through us, contact us directly rather than going through the DVSA site, since we'll need to update our own records alongside the DVSA's. Tell us your booking details and we'll confirm whether you're inside the free cancellation window. ## What you need before you cancel Have the following ready so the cancellation goes through cleanly: - Your driving licence number - Your theory test booking reference - The email address or phone number used when booking ## Cancelling because you're not ready A lot of cancellations happen because revision hasn't gone as planned. If that's your situation, cancelling with enough notice and rebooking for a date a few weeks later is far better than sitting the test and failing, which costs you the fee anyway and delays your practical test route.
