[Home](/) 2. / [Learner Hub](/learn) 3. / [Theory test](/learn/theory-test) 4. / The theory test pass mark explained ## The short version - The theory test has two separate sections, each with its own pass mark. - You must pass both the multiple-choice questions and the hazard perception clip section to pass overall. - The multiple-choice section pass mark is 43 out of 50 in 2026. - The hazard perception pass mark is 44 out of 75 in 2026. - You get your result at the test centre before you leave, not by post. ## Two sections, two pass marks The car theory test is made up of two distinct sections: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. They are scored separately, and you must reach the pass mark in both sections on the same sitting to pass the theory test overall. This trips some learners up. It is entirely possible to score well above the pass mark in the multiple-choice section but fail the hazard perception clips, or the other way round. A pass in one section does not carry over if you resit, so both need to be right on the day. ## The multiple-choice section The multiple-choice section presents a series of questions drawn from topics such as road signs, hazard awareness, vehicle safety, rules of the road and documentation. According to GOV.UK, in 2026 there are 50 questions and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. Questions can have one correct answer or, occasionally, more than one, and the screen will tell you how many answers to select. You can flag questions and go back to review them before submitting, so it is worth working through steadily rather than rushing to finish early. ## The hazard perception section The hazard perception section shows a series of video clips filmed from a driver's point of view. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard, and one clip contains two. You click the mouse or touch the screen as soon as you spot a hazard developing, and the earlier you respond correctly, the higher your score for that clip. According to GOV.UK, in 2026 there are 14 clips worth a maximum of 5 points each, giving a maximum score of 75, and the pass mark is 44 out of 75. Clicking constantly or in a fixed pattern is detected and can score zero for that clip, so genuine hazard recognition matters more than trying to game the timing. ## Why the pass mark exists in two parts Splitting the test into two sections tests two different skills. The multiple-choice section checks your knowledge of rules, signs and safe practice. The hazard perception section checks whether you can apply that knowledge in real time, spotting developing risk before it becomes a problem. A driver who knows the rules but reacts slowly to hazards, or who reacts quickly but does not understand the reasoning behind a rule, is missing half of what the test is designed to check. That is why both pass marks must be met independently. ## What happens if you fail one section If you pass the multiple-choice section but fail hazard perception, or vice versa, you fail the theory test overall and need to resit the whole test, both sections, on another day. There is no partial credit carried forward. This is worth planning for in your revision. Some learners spend almost all their time on question banks and treat hazard perception as an afterthought, then fail on the clips despite strong multiple-choice knowledge. Both sections deserve real practice time. ## Getting your result You get your result before you leave the test centre. Staff will usually hand you a printed statement of results showing your overall pass or fail and your scores for each section. Keep this safe, as it confirms your outcome even before any formal certificate arrives. If you pass, you will also receive your theory test pass certificate, which you will need when you book your practical driving test. If you fail, the result slip will usually show which section let you down, which is useful for focusing your revision before you rebook. ## Practising against the real pass mark When you practise, mark yourself against the actual pass marks rather than a rough percentage. Getting 40 out of 50 on multiple-choice questions might sound reasonable, but it is below the 43 required, so treat anything under the real threshold as more revision needed, not a near pass. The same applies to hazard perception. Scoring in the low 30s out of 75 in practice is well short of the 44 pass mark, even though it might feel close on a percentage basis. Aim for a comfortable margin above the pass mark in practice, not just scraping over it, since nerves on the day can affect performance. ## Where to find official practice material Use DVSA-approved revision material and the official Highway Code as your foundation, since practice questions and clips should reflect the real test format and difficulty.
