You pass with no serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 driving faults. Most people who fail do not fail because they cannot drive. A driving fault (often called a minor) is a mistake with no immediate danger. A serious fault involves potential danger. A dangerous fault involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property. One serious or dangerous fault ends the test in a fail; so does accumulating 16 or more driving faults. Repeating the same driving fault matters. Fifteen different small errors will pass; the same error four or five times becomes a habit in the examiner's eyes and can be upgraded to serious. ### What test day actually looks like You will need your provisional licence and a car that is legal, insured and fit for test. Arrive early but not so early that you sit in the waiting room stewing. The examiner will check your documents, ask you to read a number plate, ask one 'tell me' question before you drive and one 'show me' question while driving. The route is not published. DVSA stopped releasing test routes in 2010, so anyone selling you 'the routes' for your centre is selling guesswork. What you can prepare for is the type of road around the centre — dual carriageways, rural lanes, tight residential grids, a particular awkward roundabout. ### If it does not go your way You must wait at least ten working days before taking another practical test. Use that time properly: read the mark sheet with your instructor, target the specific faults, and book a mock test under real conditions before the retest. A fail is information, not a verdict.
