The DVSA can ask you to perform one of four possible exercises on the practical test: parallel parking at the side of the road, bay parking (forward or reverse) at a car park, or pulling up on the right, reversing two car lengths and rejoining traffic. The examiner picks one; you do not get to choose. What learners get wrong is treating manoeuvres as a sequence of reference points to memorise. Examiners are marking control, accuracy and — above all — observation. Step 4 ### Hill starts Not a test manoeuvre, but it appears everywhere on a route. ## Manoeuvres: what you need to know ### The four test manoeuvres Parallel parking asks you to pull up behind a parked car and reverse into the space in a controlled, accurate way. Forward bay parking usually pairs with reversing out; reverse bay parking pairs with driving out. Pulling up on the right is the one learners neglect most, and the one that catches them out because it asks you to cross the road, reverse against the flow of traffic and rejoin safely. - — Parallel parking — kerb-side accuracy and control at slow speed. - — Reverse bay parking — most common at test centres with car parks. - — Forward bay parking — easier going in, harder coming out. - — Pull up on the right — under-practised and heavily observation-marked. ### Slow speed is a skill, not a delay Every manoeuvre is easier at walking pace. In a manual that means clutch control at the biting point; in an automatic it means covering the brake and letting creep do the work. If the car is moving faster than you can think, you will steer late and end up correcting rather than placing the car. Time spent on clutch control early pays for itself across every manoeuvre, hill start and junction you will ever do. ### Observation is what the examiner is actually marking Look all round before you start, keep checking as you move, and pause if anything approaches. Blind-spot checks over your shoulder matter more than mirrors here, because a mirror does not show the child who has stepped off the pavement or the cyclist coming up your nearside. It is completely acceptable to stop, reset and try again if the manoeuvre goes wrong. A correction done safely is not an automatic fault.
