[Home](/) 2. / [Learner Hub](/learn) 3. / [Licences & documents](/learn/licences-and-documents) 4. / Driving licence categories explained ## The short version - Category B is the standard car licence most learners are working towards. - Passing in an automatic restricts you to automatics only; passing in a manual lets you drive both. - Category B covers most cars up to certain weight and passenger limits, with some trailer restrictions. - Other categories, such as motorcycles, minibuses or towing larger trailers, need separate entitlement. - Your photocard shows exactly which categories you hold and any relevant restriction codes. ## Why categories confuse new drivers Most learners never think about licence categories until test day, when the certificate mentions category B. In lessons, questions usually come later: can I tow a trailer, can I drive a minibus for a club, can I ride a moped on my car licence? The answers all come back to which category, or categories, your licence actually covers. A UK driving licence is not one single entitlement. It is a list of categories, each with its own rules about vehicle type, weight, passenger numbers and age. Passing your car test gives you category B, but that does not automatically cover every vehicle you might want to drive later. ## What category B actually covers Category B is the standard licence for cars. It generally covers vehicles up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass with up to 8 passenger seats, plus the driver. This covers the overwhelming majority of ordinary cars and small vans that learners train in. Category B also has rules about towing. Historically, licences issued before certain dates carried different trailer entitlements. If you passed your test more recently, your category B licence may have restrictions on towing larger trailers, and you may need to pass an additional category BE test, or meet weight limits, to tow bigger loads. Always check your specific entitlement and current GOV.UK guidance if towing matters to you. - Cars and small vans up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass. - Up to 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver. - Towing rules vary depending on when you passed your test and the trailer weight. - Check your photocard and GOV.UK for your exact towing entitlement. ## Automatic versus manual: category B restrictions If you pass your practical test in an automatic car, your licence carries restriction code 78, meaning you can only drive automatic vehicles within category B. If you pass in a manual car, you are entitled to drive both manual and automatic vehicles, because manual driving covers the wider skill set. This decision matters before you even book your test. Learners sometimes choose automatic training for confidence or because of a specific need, which is entirely valid, but they should understand the restriction that follows. If you later want to drive a manual car, you would need to pass a further manual test, since the automatic-only restriction cannot simply be removed by declaration. ## Other common categories you might come across Beyond category B, there are separate categories for motorcycles and mopeds (categories AM, A1, A2 and A), minibuses (category D1), buses (category D), and various lorry categories (C1, C, and combinations with trailers such as C1E and CE). Each has its own age requirements, medical standards and test structure. You do not automatically gain these by holding category B. Some categories have grandfather rights depending on when a licence was first issued, particularly for older drivers with entitlements gained under earlier rules, but a newly qualified car driver starts with category B only, plus provisional entitlement to certain other categories that still requires further training and testing before you can drive them unsupervised. - AM, A1, A2, A: mopeds and motorcycles, split by age and engine size. - B: standard cars and small vans, as covered above. - BE: cars towing heavier trailers beyond category B limits. - C1, C: medium and large lorries. - D1, D: minibuses and buses. ## How to check what your licence covers Your photocard licence lists the categories you hold on the back, along with the date each was obtained and any expiry date for that category. Provisional entitlements are shown separately from full entitlements. If you are unsure what your licence actually covers, you can also use the free GOV.UK “check your driving licence information” service to see your full record. This matters practically. If a job or a hobby needs you to drive a minibus, tow a horsebox, or ride a motorcycle, do not assume your car licence covers it. Check the category required, check whether you hold it, and if not, find out what additional training and test is needed before driving that vehicle on the road. ## What this means while you are learning For most learners with Fast Track Driving Lessons, category B is the immediate goal, whether through a standard course of lessons or an intensive course of 10 to 40 hours at £61.23 per hour. Deciding early whether to train in a manual or automatic car matters, because it determines whether your eventual licence will carry the automatic-only restriction. If you are still building up to your test, focus on category B first. Questions about towing, minibuses or motorcycles can wait until you have your full car licence, at which point you can look at what additional category, if any, suits your needs. In the meantime, you can prepare for your theory test using the free practice at /theory. ## Common misunderstandings about categories One common misunderstanding is thinking a full car licence lets you drive any van or minibus regardless of size, when in fact larger vehicles fall outside category B and need separate entitlement. Another is assuming an automatic test pass can be quietly upgraded to manual entitlement without a further test, which is not the case. A third is forgetting that towing rules depend on when you passed your test.
