A green octagonal badge means an Approved Driving Instructor who has passed all three DVSA qualifying parts. A pink triangular badge means a trainee instructor on a licence to practise, still working towards full qualification. A trainee is not automatically a poor instructor, but you should know which you are getting and be charged accordingly. If there is no badge on display, do not get in the car. - — Green octagon: fully qualified ADI. - — Pink triangle: trainee (PDI) on a licence to practise. - — No badge: not lawfully charging for tuition. - — You can check an instructor's registration through GOV.UK. ### What a good lesson looks like It starts with a recap and a stated objective, spends most of its time driving rather than parked in a lay-by talking, and ends with specific feedback and a named target for next time. You should leave able to say what you got better at. You should also be told honestly where you are against test standard. An instructor who keeps taking bookings while never mentioning readiness is not doing the job. ### When to change instructor Persistent lateness, lessons that overrun into other pupils' time, shouting, no structure, no feedback, or pressure to book a test you are not ready for. None of these are things to tolerate out of politeness. Changing costs a small amount of continuity and saves a great deal of money.
