Nothing is sudden, because they saw it coming. That comes from lifting your eyes further down the road, reading the shape of the junction ahead, and noticing the brake lights three cars in front rather than the bumper immediately ahead. The practical version is simple: scan far, mid and near in a rolling cycle, check mirrors before any change of speed or direction, and ask yourself what could reasonably happen next. ### The conditions nobody practises in Most learners take every lesson in daylight, in dry weather, on familiar roads. Then they pass and immediately meet rain at night on an unlit A road. If you can, book at least one lesson in the dark and one in poor weather — the skills are different, not just harder. Motorways are the other gap. Since June 2018 learners in England, Scotland and Wales can take motorway lessons with an approved instructor in a dual-control car. It is worth doing before you pass rather than discovering slip roads alone. - — Night driving: dipped headlights, judging speed by lit references, glare management. - — Rain: doubled stopping distances and reduced visibility. - — Motorways: joining, lane discipline, and reading gantry signs. - — Rural roads: bends, mud, tractors and no pavement for pedestrians. ### Confidence is built, not waited for Confidence follows competence, never the other way round. If a manoeuvre or a road frightens you, the answer is a structured, repeated exposure to it with an instructor beside you, not avoiding it until after the test. Pass Plus and post-test refresher hours exist for exactly this.
