You will spend more time on clutch control early on, but nothing else about the test changes. ## What to expect ### Clutch control first Biting point, moving away, hill starts and stalling recovery are taught before you touch busy roads. ### Gear discipline Block changing, engine braking and matching gear to speed, so you are not hunting for third on a roundabout. ### One licence, every car Pass in a manual and you can legally drive an automatic too. Pass in an automatic and you cannot. That extra layer is why manual learners tend to need more hours than automatic learners, and why the first two or three sessions look different. You will spend them somewhere quiet finding the biting point, moving away and stopping, and stalling. Stalling is not a setback; it is the thing that teaches your left foot what the clutch is doing. Once moving away is reliable, clutch work stops being a separate topic. From that point on it is folded into everything else — you learn hill starts as part of junctions, and gear selection as part of reading the road ahead. ## How many manual driving lessons will you need? The DVSA's long-standing figure is around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice for a complete beginner. That is an average across every learner in the country, not a target. In practice, a beginner with no private practice usually books somewhere between 30 and 40 hours with us. Someone who has driven on a farm, held a licence abroad, or has a parent's car available for practice between lessons often lands closer to 20. We would rather give you an honest estimate after your first assessment session than sell you a number on day one. If you buy a course and finish early, we tell you. ## Manual vs automatic: what changes The licence is the real difference. Pass in a manual and your licence covers both manual and automatic cars. Pass in an automatic and you are restricted to automatics until you take a separate manual test. The test itself is identical in structure. Examiners do not mark you harder for choosing one transmission over the other, and there is no separate manual driving test booking — you simply turn up in the car you learned in. Manual is still the default choice for anyone who might drive a work van, borrow a family car, hire abroad, or buy cheaply second-hand. Automatic makes more sense if your only goal is getting on the road quickly and your future cars will be automatic or electric anyway. ## The clutch problems everyone hits Stalling at junctions is the most common one, and it is almost always the clutch coming up too fast rather than not enough gas. Your instructor will slow the whole sequence down until the timing is muscle memory. Rolling back on hill starts is the second. The fix is handbrake discipline, not heroics with the pedals — hold it, find the bite, feel the front of the car lift, then release.
