We build up in stages so nothing arrives before you are ready for it. ## What to expect ### Quiet start Your first session covers the cockpit drill, controls and moving away in a low-traffic area. ### Stage by stage Junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvres and faster roads are introduced in a fixed order. ### No pressure on test dates We only recommend booking your test once you are consistently at test standard. You are not behind, and your instructor is not expecting anything from you on day one beyond turning up with your provisional licence. Your first session starts stationary in a quiet residential road or an industrial estate at a dead hour. Seat position, mirrors, the cockpit drill, then the pedals and steering explained with the engine off. You will drive before the lesson ends, but slowly and on a road with almost nothing on it. Nothing gets introduced before the thing underneath it is reliable. That is the whole method. ## The order things are taught in Controls and moving away, then stopping under control. Then junctions — emerging left and right, which is where mirror and observation habits are built. Then crossroads, traffic lights and roundabouts, in that order, because each one adds a layer of decision-making to the last. Then meeting traffic, hill starts and busier roads at higher speeds. Manoeuvres — bay parking, parallel parking, pulling up on the right and reversing — come in once your general road driving is calm enough that you have attention spare. Dual carriageways, night driving, poor weather and finally mock tests on real test routes close it out. ## How many lessons does a beginner need? The DVSA's figure of around 45 hours plus 22 hours of private practice is the honest starting point for a complete beginner in a manual car. Automatic learners typically need fewer. Two hour lessons work better than one hour lessons for beginners. By the time you have picked up, driven to a suitable area and settled, a single hour has barely started. Frequency matters more than most people expect. Two lessons a week keeps skills warm; one lesson a fortnight means spending the first twenty minutes of every lesson recovering what you had last time — and paying for it. ## What you need before your first lesson A valid UK provisional licence, which you can apply for from your 17th birthday (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP). Your instructor will check it at the start of the first lesson and legally cannot teach you without it. Glasses or contacts if you need them for the number plate test at 20 metres. Flat, thin-soled shoes — no boots, no chunky trainers, nothing you cannot feel the pedals through. You do not need insurance, a car, or any theory test progress to start lessons.
