The first is manual or automatic. A manual pass lets you drive both manual and automatic cars; an automatic pass restricts you to automatics until you take a manual test. Automatic learners generally reach test standard in fewer hours because there is no clutch or gear work sitting underneath every other skill, so the honest trade is fewer hours now against a narrower licence later. The second is how recently you have driven. Learners consistently overestimate what old experience is worth. Ten hours two years ago is not the same as four hours last month — road-craft and manoeuvre precision fade quickly without repetition, while knowledge does not. That is why our course recommender asks about recency as well as total hours, and why two people with identical lesson counts often need very different courses. Everything after that is scheduling. Intensive courses compress the same syllabus into weeks rather than months. They are not a shortcut through content; they are a way of stopping the content leaking away between lessons. ## Which lesson type fits which situation ### Never driven at all Beginner lessons, then a 30 to 40 hour course. Expect the first sessions to be somewhere quiet learning the controls. ### A few lessons, then a gap Refresher or semi-intensive. Control work comes back quickly; junction judgement takes longer. ### Test booked, small faults A 10 or 15 hour booster built around mock tests and the roads near your test centre. ### Licensed but out of practice Refresher lessons targeted at the specific thing you avoid — motorways, parking, night driving. ### Anxious about starting Beginner lessons at two sessions a week rather than three, with extra time before busy roads. ### Need a licence for work An intensive course with a fixed end date, booked around your theory test and test-centre availability. ## What every lesson with us includes Whichever type you book, the instructor holds a DVSA green ADI badge, which we check by number before they can take a booking through us, and teaches in a dual-control car insured for learner drivers. Lessons run to a written plan so you can see what a block of hours is meant to achieve, and mock tests are marked the way an examiner marks them rather than graded on encouragement.
