# Driving crash courses: the same hours, months sooner

A crash course is an intensive driving course by another name — your tuition packed into days or weeks instead of a lesson a week. One flat rate of £61.23 an hour, DVSA-approved instructors, and an honest answer on how many hours you actually need.

[Find my course length](/course-recommender)[See prices](/pricing)

## Crash course formats

Same instructor, same syllabus — the difference is how the hours are spread across your diary.

## One-week crash course

Roughly five to six hours a day, Monday to Friday, with the practical test at the end of the week or the Monday after. Suited to learners who already have some road experience and can take the week off.

## Two-week semi-intensive

Three to four hours a day with rest days in between. The extra sleep between sessions is what makes the learning stick, and most people who have never driven do better on this than on a straight week.

## Weekend crash course

Longer sessions across consecutive weekends so you keep working. It takes a few weeks longer in calendar time but the same number of hours behind the wheel.

## Refresher crash course

Ten to fifteen hours for licence holders who have not driven for years, or learners who failed a test and want a short, targeted block before a retest.

## What a crash course can and can't do

### A crash course is not a shortcut to a pass

It compresses the same learning into fewer weeks. What it saves you is calendar time and the drift that comes with one lesson a week, not the hours themselves.

### The test date is the real bottleneck

Practical test waiting times run into months in many areas. Book your theory early, then let us look for a short-notice practical slot that lines up with the end of your course.

### You must pass the theory first

You cannot sit a practical test without a valid theory certificate. Use our free theory practice while you wait for your course to start.

### Hours are estimated honestly

The DVSA average is around 45 hours of tuition plus private practice. If you have never driven, a ten-hour crash course is not going to get you there and we will say so.

[Start free theory practice while you wait for your course →](/theory)

## Booking a crash course around your test date

The order that works is: pass the theory, get a practical test booked, then build the course backwards from that date so your last few hours land in the days before you drive to the test centre. Doing it the other way round — finishing a course and then joining a three-month test queue — is how learners lose what they paid for.

We work from your local [DVSA test centre](/driving-test-centres) so the final sessions cover the roads, junctions and roundabouts the examiners actually use. Check [which areas we cover](/driving-lessons-in) to see instructor availability near you, or read the [how it works](/how-it-works) guide for the full sequence.

## Crash course questions, answered

### What is a crash course in driving?

A crash course — also called an intensive driving course — packs your tuition into days or weeks rather than one lesson a week. You typically drive three to six hours a day with a DVSA-approved instructor, then take your practical test at the end of the block while everything is fresh.

### How much does a driving crash course cost?

Our courses are charged at one flat hourly rate of £61.23 an hour, so a 10 hour course is £612.28 and a 40 hour course is £2,449.10. There is no separate booking fee, no peak-time surcharge and no mark-up for automatic tuition.

### Is the practical test included in the course price?

The DVSA test fee is paid to the government, not to us, so it is not included — that is £62 for a weekday practical test. What is included is help getting a test booked and, where possible, finding a short-notice cancellation slot that fits the end of your course.

### How many hours do I need for a crash course?

As a rough guide: 10 to 15 hours if you are a confident driver preparing for a retest, 20 to 30 hours if you have had lessons before, and 30 to 40 hours if you are starting from scratch. Our course recommender asks four questions and gives you an honest figure.

### Can I do a crash course as a complete beginner?

Yes, but choose a two-week format rather than a single week. Beginners learn faster with a night's sleep between sessions, and a five-day sprint with no driving background usually ends in extra hours anyway.

### How quickly can I start?

Instructor availability is usually the quick part — most areas can start within one to two weeks. The practical test date is what takes the planning, so tell us your theory status when you enquire and we will work backwards from a realistic test slot.

### Are crash courses available in an automatic?

Yes. Automatic crash courses run in exactly the same formats at the same hourly rate. Learners often need slightly fewer hours in an automatic because there is no clutch control to master.
