Assessment session Your first session is used to check where you actually are, not where the booking form said you were. The plan is adjusted from there. ### 2\. The main block The bulk of your 40 hours, usually in two or three hour sessions. Longer sessions mean less time re-learning between lessons. ### 3\. Mock and test The last block is mock tests and test-route practice. We recommend a test date once you are consistently passing mocks. ## The full programme, from first drive to independent driving Forty hours is the complete course: everything in the DVSA syllabus, taught in order, with time deliberately left in the plan for the parts you personally find hardest rather than an average learner's weak spots. It is the right booking if you have never driven a car, have no access to private practice, and would rather pass first time than book a cheaper course and pay for a re-test. It aligns closely with the long-standing DVSA guidance that a complete beginner needs somewhere around 45 hours of tuition, most of which this course provides. It is over-booking if you have driven regularly and recently. In that case the recommender will point you at a shorter course, and we would rather you booked that. ## What forty hours covers that shorter courses cannot Breadth of conditions. Town, rural, dual carriageway, night and wet-weather driving all get real time, not a single token session. Rural roads in particular — bends, hidden entrances, poor surfaces and inconsistent speed limits — are where inexperienced drivers are most exposed after passing, and the test cannot cover them everywhere. Recovery from mistakes. Shorter courses teach you to do things correctly; forty hours has room to teach what to do when something goes wrong mid-manoeuvre, which is what keeps a wobble from becoming a serious fault on test. Three mock tests and a full test-day rehearsal, spaced so that the first is early enough to be diagnostic rather than reassuring. ## Six to eight weeks, and what to do in parallel Most learners complete forty hours in six to eight weeks at two or three sessions a week. It can be run faster, but for a genuine beginner the limiting factor is consolidation rather than availability. Book your theory test in week one and use the free theory hub between lessons. Hazard perception in particular rewards spaced practice far more than cramming. Watch the practical test waiting time at your local centre from the start of the course, not the end.
