Intensive driving courses

# Intensive driving courses, priced by the hour

An intensive driving course puts your lessons into a short block of weeks instead of one hour a week for a year. Courses run from 10 to 40 hours, all at £61.23 an hour with a DVSA approved instructor in your area.

## What an intensive driving course actually is

An intensive driving course is the same syllabus as weekly lessons, delivered in a concentrated block. Instead of a single hour every Saturday, you drive for two to four hours at a time, several times a week, until you reach test standard. Most people finish somewhere between one week and six weeks depending on how many hours they book.

The reason it works is simple: less is forgotten between sessions. A learner doing one hour a week spends the first fifteen minutes of every lesson getting back to where they were. On a course, you carry yesterday's progress straight into today, so the hours go further. That is also why an intensive course is not automatically cheaper — it is faster, and for most people the total hours end up similar.

It suits you if you have a deadline (a job, university, a move), if you have started and stalled before, or if you simply want a fixed end point rather than open-ended lessons. It suits you less if you cannot free up daytime hours, or if long drives leave you mentally wiped — in that case a semi-intensive course spread over three or four weeks is the better fit.

### In short

- 10 to 40 hours, all at £61.23 an hour
- Typically one to six weeks start to finish
- DVSA approved (green badge) instructors only
- We check practical test availability before setting the hours
- Manual and automatic

## How many hours do you need?

Be honest with yourself here. The most common reason an intensive course disappoints someone is that they booked the cheapest band rather than the right one.

Where you are now

Course to look at

Typical time

Never driven, no lessons at all

30–40 hours

4–6 weeks

A handful of lessons, still on quiet roads

25–30 hours

3–5 weeks

20 hours

2–4 weeks

15 hours

1–3 weeks

Test booked, just need polishing

10 hours

under 2 weeks

For context, DVSA guidance has long put the average learner at around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice before test standard. Courses at the shorter end assume you already have some of those hours behind you. [More on working out your hours](/learn/learning-to-drive/how-many-hours-to-learn-to-drive).

## Intensive, semi-intensive or weekly lessons?

### Intensive

Two to four hour sessions, several days a week, finished in one to three weeks.

Works when

- Fastest route to a licence
- Very little forgotten between sessions
- Fixed, known end date

The trade-off

- Needs daytime availability
- Mentally tiring
- Test availability can be the limiting factor

### Semi-intensive

Two or three sessions a week spread across three to six weeks.

Works when

- Fits around work, college or shifts
- Time for the learning to settle
- Still far quicker than weekly

The trade-off

- Longer than a true intensive
- Needs a consistent weekly commitment

### Weekly lessons

One hour a week, the traditional route, often nine to twelve months.

Works when

- Low weekly cost
- Very easy to fit in
- Plenty of thinking time between lessons

The trade-off

- Progress is slow and easily lost
- Total hours often end up higher
- No clear finish line

## How your course is built

01

### Assessment

A short conversation about what you have already driven, plus an assessment drive if you have any experience at all.

02

### Hour recommendation

We tell you the hours we think you need, not the hours that make the cheapest headline. If we think 20 will not do it, we will say so.

03

### Test booking

We check practical test availability at your local centre first, so your course finishes near your test date rather than months before it.

04

### Instructor allocation

A DVSA approved instructor covering your postcode, with the badge number checked before the booking is confirmed.

## What is included, and what is not

### Included in the course price

- All tuition hours with a DVSA approved instructor
- Use of the instructor's dual-control car for lessons and for the test
- A written stage-by-stage lesson plan
- Mock tests before we let you sit the real one
- Test-route familiarisation around your local centre
- Pick-up and drop-off within your instructor's area

### Paid separately

- The DVSA practical test fee: £62 weekday, £75 evenings, weekends and bank holidays
- The DVSA theory test fee: £23
- Your provisional licence, if you do not already have one (£34 online)
- Any additional hours you choose to add after the course ends

DVSA and DVLA published fees, correct at August 2026. Fees are set by government and can change — check GOV.UK before you book.

## Intensive driving course questions

### How much does an intensive driving course cost?

Our intensive driving courses are charged at £61.23 an hour, so a 20 hour course is £1,224.55 and a 40 hour course is £2,449.10. That covers the lessons and instructor time. DVSA test fees are paid separately: £62 for a weekday practical test, £75 evenings and weekends, and £23 for the theory test (DVSA published fees, 2026 — check GOV.UK for the current amount).

### How many hours do I need for an intensive driving course?

It depends on where you are starting from. Complete beginners usually need 30 to 40 hours, part-trained learners with a gap since their last lessons tend to need 20 to 25, and someone who already drives well and just needs polishing before a booked test can do it in 10 to 15. The DVSA has long suggested the average learner needs around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice, so treat anything under 30 hours from a standing start as optimistic.

### How long does an intensive driving course take?

Anything from a few days to about six weeks. A 10 hour booster is normally done inside a week. A 30 or 40 hour beginner course is usually spread over four to six weeks so the learning has time to settle, though it can be compressed into one or two weeks if you can drive several hours a day.

### Can you book my practical test for me?

Yes. We look at test availability at your local centre before we agree a course length, so the hours and the test date line up rather than you finishing the course and then waiting months. If you already have a test booked, tell us the date and we will build the course around it.

### Do you do automatic intensive courses?

Yes, every hour band is available in an automatic car where we have an automatic instructor covering your area. Automatic courses often need fewer hours because clutch control and gear changes are off the list, but the observation, planning and manoeuvre work is identical.

### Are intensive driving courses harder to pass?

The test is exactly the same test. What changes is how quickly you arrive at it. Intensive courses work well when the hours are honest for your starting point and you sit a mock test before booking the real one. They go wrong when someone books far too few hours to hit a price. That is why we would rather recommend more hours than sell you a cheap course you fail.

### What age do I need to be?

You can start learning to drive a car at 17, or at 16 if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment. You need a valid provisional licence and a theory test pass before you can sit the practical.

### What happens if I fail my test?

You get a debrief with your instructor, then extra hours if you need them and a fresh test date. Our pass guarantee page sets out exactly what is covered and what is not, in plain terms.
